From the January 2012 issue of Tennessee Health and Wellness Magazine. Written by Michael Ramsey, PAI Nashville Clinic Director.
Nearly 40 million women suffer from hair loss in the United States. Unlike men who bald, women’s hair tends to thin and they lose hair volume causing more scalp to show through the hair. Thinning hair for a woman makes it difficult for her to style her hair and can lead to lower self-confidence, a diminished feeling of attractiveness and often can lead to depression.

Great Options for Thinning Hair

The good news is women today have several great options for their thinning hair. The first is styling the hair in a way to cover the thinning areas. The second is adding more hair to the thinning areas through surgical or non-surgical options. The last option is to treat the thinning hair with products or therapies to stop or reverse hair loss.

By styling their hair in certain ways, women can use their fuller areas to cover thinning areas. Also by teasing their hair or using permanents which can make the hair fuller they can help minimize the appearance of thinning hair. However, these options don’t solve the problem and can be limiting. If the wind blows or the hair gets wet, the thinning areas can be revealed. Also, too much processing of hair that is already fine and weak can accelerate hair loss.

PAI Female Hair Loss Patient - Before and After

Adding More Hair

Adding more hair to the thinning areas can be done surgically or non-surgically. The surgical option, known as hair transplantation, is a procedure where hair from thicker fuller areas, typically the sides and or back areas, are moved to thinner areas to make them fuller. Hair that grows on the sides and back tends to be permanent so when it is transplanted it is considered permanent. Addtionally men and women have more hair on the sides and back then they need.

The procedure requires very little down time with little discomfort. Once the small hair seeds are planted, they gradually begin to produce and grow hairs starting a few months after the procedure. Within a full year, all the hair seeds are growing hairs. Because of this gradual filling in, the patient notices a gradual thickening of the hair as shown below.
Hair transplantation has become enormously popular for men and women. In our practice, about 80% of women can be helped with hair transplant surgery. The best way to determine if you are a candidate is to consult with a hair restoration specialist. We offer free and private evaluations / consultations at our office – PAI Medical Group of Brentwood.

Non-Surgical Option

(L) Unhealthy Hair and Scalp (R) Healthy Hair and Scalp

The non-surgical option is the second option for adding hair to make it fuller. Non-surgical hair replacement has been around for centuries. From powdered wigs of the Middle Ages to today’s high-tech, perfectly matched, non-surgical hair systems – these options add fullness and density to thinning areas and are safe, reliable, affordable and reversible. The Hair Club is an excellent resource for men and women looking for this non-surgical option.

Treatment options are recommended for men and women in the early stages of hair loss who want to try and control hair loss and encourage recently thinned hair to re-grow and become fuller and thicker. The key to the success of treatments is to catch hair in the early stages of decline before the hair cells have died off. Through treatments, health and vitality can be restored to the hair.

Treatment options are non-surgical and range from products that block the hormone DHT that can cause hair loss to vasodilators that add more blood flow to the area to promote hair growth, like Propecia and Rogaine, to the FDA-approved Laser Hair Therapies now being offered in more advanced clinics like ours.

New Treatment Option – Cold Lasers

The new EXT-AlphaLase 50 cold laser program is very effective at restoring fullness, health and vitality to the hair. The cold laser- also known as Low Level Light Laser- is used to increase microcirculation through a process known as photo-biostimulation. This helps with hair loss and certain types of scalp maladies. We offer all the latest in treatment options at PAI Medical.

Win the Hair Loss Battle

Female hair loss affects many millions of women today but there are great options to help. From surgical to non-surgical options, many women don’t have to suffer the devastating affects of hair loss anymore. Through the art of science and medicine, winning the hair loss battle is something millions of proactive, courageous women are doing today.

While not all people are candidates for hair restoration surgery many are. Men with extreme hair loss – those who are a Norwood Class 6 or 7 will not be able to achieve full coverage but many are happy with partial coverage.

Women who have certain types of hair loss are not candidates for hair transplants. Seeing a hair restoration specialist about these types is important. We find that 80% of females we see are candidates for hair restoration surgery. Women -like men- also benefit from Low Level Light Therapy. This helps to reverse hair loss in some cases and provides healthier fuller more manageable hair for most people.

What is LLLT or Low Level Light Laser Therapy? Low Level Light Laser Therapy is a proven non-surgical technology using low level light energy to treat and control hair loss and help men and women with fine thin hair. This

What is LLLT or Low Level Light Laser
Therapy?

Low Level Light Laser Therapy is a proven non-surgical
technology using low level light energy to treat and
control hair loss and help men and women with fine thin
hair. This technology has been seen on many T.V.
shows and more recently on the Nashville based show
“The Doctors” hosted by Nashville’s Dr. Travis Stork.
During the show, Dr. Zerring illustrated how the new
hooded laser emits low level light therapy to “Increase
cell metabolism to help the hair grow thicker and fuller.”
He explains that low level laser photons irradiate the
entire scalp increasing micro-circulation of blood
supplies to the hair follicles. This photobioactivating
treatment uses a special light source to increase blood
flow and follicle microcirculation. This pure red, “soft”
laser stimulates the scalp, significantly increasing the
number of red corpuscles that deliver life giving oxygen
and vital nutrients to the hair bulb. This in turn
increases nutrient supply to increase skin repair and
hair growth. It also activates the body’s antiinflammatory
repair and regenerative mechanisms
which have been shown to significantly increase healing
after hair restoration surgery.
Hair follicles that are dormant and not dead can often be
rehabilitated. Existing established hair becomes thicker,
looks and feels softer and is easier to manage.
This wavelength doesn’t burn or damage tissue like the
higher wavelength lasers used in surgery to cut or
cauterize tissue.

What are the benefits of Anagen Laser Hair
Therapy?
Using the correct power and wavelength the low
level light can:
 Increase blood supply by 54% after one
treatment.
 Stimulate hair re-growth.
 Help to control and manage hair loss.
 Increase hair tensile strength and overall
hair shaft quality.
 Enhance the lasting effects of salon,
chemical processes such as colors and
perms.
 Help to create the healthiest environment
for your hair.

Scientific Measured Benefits of Low Level Light Laser.

Professor Andre Mester is considered the father of Laser
Biostimulation. In 1967 professor Mester noted that while
experimenting with laboratory mice he discovered that low energy
laser radiation accelerated healing of wounds and damaged hairs
around the wounded area. He noted a rapid increase in the
amount of collagen, an increase in micro-circulation, quicker regrowth
and thickening of the hairs in the affected area.
In clinical trials performed by world renowned Dr. Unger, he
discoved that “97% of patients have had some improvement
in hair characteristics, stabilization of hair loss, or hair regrowth.”
Hair re-growth is defined by Dr. Unger and
colleagues as an increase of hair count of 11% or more from
baseline count.
In the most recently conducted FDA clinical trials of the
device, patients studied were men and women with thinning
hair in the scalp area. The patients received two low-level
laser light treatments per week over a six month period.
Results have shown:
• 100% of men had stabilization of hair loss in frontal
and vertex (top of the head) areas;
• 84.6% of men had hair re-growth (11% or more
from baseline) in the frontal area;
• 82.8% of men had hair re-growth (11% or more
from baseline) in the vertex area;
• 87.5% of women had stabilization of hair loss in
the frontal area;
• 100% of women had stabilization of hair loss in the
vertex area;
• 75% of women had hair re-growth (11% or more
from baseline) in the frontal area;
• and, 6.4% of women had hair re-growth (11% or
more from baseline) in the vertex.
“No side effects of low-level laser therapy have been
observed and there here have been no reports of eye
damage from exposure to low-level laser light,” Dr. Unger
adds
