Hair Plugs vs. Micrografts
If you had investigated getting hair transplants twenty years ago, the only option that was probably available to you were hair plugs. At the time, hair plugs tended to be the only way that you could have natural hair growing in areas that had lost the battle with hair loss. Unfortunately, due to the size of the grafts needed for hair plugs, the newly placed transplants tended to resemble doll’s hair. Over time, a better option presented itself in hair follicle micro-grafts.
Hair Follicle Micro-grafts
Hair follicle micro-grafts give patients a much more natural looking head of hair as opposes to hair plugs due to the fact that the donor grafts contain 1-3 hairs a piece as opposed to the 15-35 hairs from a hair plug. By using smaller amounts of hair per graft, a skilled surgeon can create a head of hair that looks far more natural than transplants by surgeons that didn’t have access to this procedure.
Many hair transplants patients today are coming in to fix the unnatural look of the hair plugs that they received many years ago. Depending on the work that was done in the past, our surgeons can either remove the old hair plugs, can refine the plugs for micro-grafts (saving on having to find new donor areas), and will then transplant the hair plug donor hair using the micro-graft method. Another option is to use micro-grafts to fill in around the hair plugs with new donor hair, filling in the original area in order to provide a more natural look.
