Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Transplant

Traditional transplant methods involve harvesting a narrow strip of hair-bearing skin from the back and sides, a region known as the ‘donor’ area. Then the skin above and below the area that was removed is pulled together and a stitch holds the two sides together as it heals. As it heals completely, it may leave a fine thin surgical scar - typically a millimeter or two in width. This ‘strip method’ requires a little longer recovery time than the FUE transplant method. The FUE transplant procedure does take longer to perform but heals quickly and creates minimal scaring - typically tiny dots - on the back and sides of the head.
With Follicular Unit Extraction follicles are removed in groups of one to four, creating much smaller incisions in the donor area with no necessity for stitches. This means follicular unit extraction is great for patients that like to keep their hair cut short or don’t have much down time for recovery. Patients can also have procedures closer together to reach their goals, as opposed to doing procedures 10 to 12 months apart like what is typically done with strip harvesting.
Neo-graft / ARTAS/ Ellis
Originally FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) transplants were all done by hand using small surgical punches to harvest the hairs. This process took much longer than the traditional strip technique and resulted in a higher number of hairs being killed in the harvesting portion of the procedure.
The newest developments have automated this FUE transplant process making it faster than before with less damage to the hairs that are being transplanted. However, this process is still considerably slower than the traditional strip technique and doesn't allow for larger 'mega-sessions' popular with patients today so it is not ideal for larger areas of hair loss unless the patient is comfortable doing multiple procedures. It also limits the number of graft types that can be used in the procedure so careful consideration should be given to these limitations.
FUE begins by shaving the donor field hair on the back of the head. Then using the FUE device individual hair follicles are gently and painlessly removed for implantation to other areas of the head. Hair from the back of the head is thicker, more dense and genetically programmed to continue to grow. The FUE device smoothly removes hair follicles but because of the small punch some hairs will be damaged in the extraction process.
FUE technology is ideal for men who wear their hair very short, patients who need small areas transplanted and for harvesting small numbers of hairs to be placed in scars on other parts of the head.
NeoGraft, ARTAS, and the Ellis systems are automated follicular unit extraction systems which make it easier than using hand punches to perform FUE hair restoration surgery.
The NeoGraft system is widely used in the United States today. It is considered by some as a 'first generation automation system' for hair transplantation and is popular with physicians who do hair transplants as a side-service and not a specialty because of it's simplicity and ease of use.

The Ellis System is used by many hair transplant surgeons today who specialize in hair restoration surgery. It is an inexpensive and simple automated punch device that can be used to augment a strip harvest procedure or as a stand alone device that can be used for a full FUE case.
